MILAN SETTLEMENT
A short distance northwest from Hill's Spring, in 1840, then was erected
a log cabin, known as the home of Armstead C. Hill, the first settler in
the vicinity of Milan. Mr. Hill first settled south of Milan about eight
miles, but was not wholly contented with his location, and sought to
better himself by the change, and thus became the first settler of the
division. Thomas Lane, John Baldridge, Esom Hannon, William Talley,
Joseph Couch, FRANCIS Drake, Donnel Doyle, Ira Sears and many others came
in 1840 and 1841, so that by the close of the last mentioned year the
Milan settlement had become the most important of any in the county. To
the north of Milan proper, and near what was afterwards named Jacksons
Corners, settled William and Branson Jackson, Samuel Rodgers, Hawkins
Harrelson, Jacob Mealman, John Needham and quite a number of others.
Hawkins Harrelston is still living and resides on or near his early home.

Molalla man shot and killed at morning party
By Tom Lawrence
A Macksburg area man faces a charge of murder following the shooting of a guest,
a 31-year-old Molalla man, in his home early Saturday morning.
Carlos Frank Williams, 41, of 10148 S. Macksburg Road, was charged with murder
and held without bail after he called the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Department
following the fatal shooting of Marvin William Rowe, Jr.
Rowe, of 210-A Shirley St. in Molalla, was with a group of nine people,
including Williams, who were partying at the rural Canby home. Witnesses told
investigators the two had been quarreling and Williams asked Rowe to leave.
Lt. Gene Hanners, who is in charge of the investigation, said witnesses,
recalled Williams, carrying a .22-caliber revolver loaded with long rifle
cartridges, confronting Rowe at approximately 4:25 a.m.
“They don’t really know exactly why this guy shot and killed the other guy. We
don’t know why,” He said.
“Witnesses said he yelled, “I told you to leave, at Rowe,” Hanners said. “Rowe
said ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’
“That’s when they heard three shots.”
Rowe was shot three times in the chest and was dead when sheriff’s deputies
arrived. “Williams called police,” Hanners said. “He indicated that he had shot
the guy.”
Hanners said there was drinking involved and Williams’ blood alcohol was
slightly over the legal limit when tested after his arrest. An autopsy on Rowe
was conducted Sunday by the state medical examiner’s office and Hanners said
toxicology reports would be given to the district attorney’s office.
Hanners said the case would go before the grand jury soon, but he had no
details. Calls to the DA’s office were not returned.

Subject: A reply to Peggy Rowe's Call for Help
Peggy, you have been an inspiration to your family. You are so generous and have
done so much for us to be thankful in your research of the McClaskey clan plus
all the others. Thank you so much for all your love and effort.
I'm sorry you're having a bump in the road right now. Hopefully, in time,
things will get better for you and your family. Time to think and veg out is
probably good therapy. It sounds like you've been stretched pretty thin with all
your volunteering.
Thank you for the opportunity, but I am not a PC wiz and would not be able to
run the Yahoo McClaskey Gene's website. Thank you again for all you do. You're
one swell cousin! My hope is that you will be feeling much better about
everything soon.
Love to you and yours - Cousin P. J. in Olympia, WA

Geography Bee Winners Named
Picture of: Wesley Miller (L), Adam Ojeda and Anthony Stuper were the top three
finishers at the Washington School Geography Bee.
by Jim Noonan, Fifth Grade Teacher, Washington School
Quick- into which bay does the Potomac River flow? Wesley Miller, a fifth grade
student at Washington School knew the answer during the school's 13th Annual
Geography Bee, sponsored by the Cloverdale Kiwanis Club.
Miller finished second in the Geo Bee behind eigth grader Adam Ojeda, who won
the contest. Third place went to Jared Stuber.
For Ojeda, it was his fourth time in the Geo Bee, which was started in 1989 by
teacher Gary Giusso. Ojeda was a participant in forth, fifth, and sixth grades,
before getting ousted in his class competition last year.
Not only did he manage to make a return to the competition this year, he won it
when he correctly identified Australia as a former prison colony.
Thanks to Linda Pardini, Pat Robards and the rest of the Cloverdale Kiwanis
Club, Ojeda went home with the top prize of $100.00, which he said he will spend
on bike parts.
Miller, one of the youngest contestants to make it to the final round of the Geo
Bee Competition, said he planned to donate some of his $50.00 award back to his
class.
